A Delicious Afternoon at The Windsor

July 12 2013 By melbournemamma 102 Comments

I was lucky enough to be invited to Afternoon Tea at The Windsor recently, and I was thrilled that I could spend the afternoon there with my mum.

I remember as a little girl, my Grandmother telling me stories of when she was younger and she and some girlfriends would get dressed up and catch the train in to the city to enjoy afternoon tea at a magnificent hotel. I always thought it sounded so glamorous and hoped that when I grew up I would do something similar.

It wasn’t until mum and I sat down and started talking about her that afternoon, that my mum told me that the Hotel Windsor was THE same place that my grandma loved coming too, more than 60 years ago.

Located at 111 Spring St, Melbourne (opposite Parliament House), The Hotel Windsor has been serving Afternoon Tea every day since 1883.

It’s not hard to see why their Afternoon Tea is iconic in Melbourne.

In addition to ribbon sandwiches and the hotel’s famous scones served with double cream and Windsor jams, we also enjoyed a yummy selection of pastries that included the classic Lemon Meringue Pie (one of my all time favs), Chocolate Éclair, Mille Feuille, Bakewell Tart, and the famous Sacher Torte.

We were also treated to a glass of sparkling wine on arrival.

With 15 exclusive teas to choose from, I settled on the The Hotel Windsor Afternoon Blend and cherished being able to drink my (three cups of) tea while still hot (a luxury not often afforded to mums).

An indulgent dessert buffet is featured on weekends for those of you with a really sweet tooth.

The Windsor offers two afternoon tea sittings seven days a week, at 12 noon and 2.30pm. The cost for weekday afternoon tea is $59 and $79 for weekends. Bookings are essential for weekends. Visit www.thehotelwindsor.com.au for further info.

The Windsor is celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2013. Built in 1883, the 180-room hotel pre-dates the Savoy in London, which was built in 1889, the Waldorf Astoria in New York which dates back to 1893, and the Ritz Paris which opened in 1898.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, The Hotel Windsor and Melbourne Mamma are giving one lucky reader the opportunity to WIN Afternoon Tea for Two at The Hotel Windsor.

Stoxbox – Let’s Get Organised

February 2 2013 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

Are you having trouble organising all the stockings and leggings you picked up during the Boxing Day sales?

Does your stocking draw look like mine (yes, that really is my draw – please stop laughing!)

I’m forever digging through a tangled mess of stockings and often find that I have more than one pair of the same pattern because I have no idea what’s in there.

If you’re like me (come on, stop denying it), you need Stoxbox.

What is Stoxbox you wonder……

Stoxbox is a fabulous product designed right here in Melbourne, to help you keep your stockings in order and make life easier.

This unique storage solution allows you to see AND store your hosiery so you can differentiate between denier, leggings or patterns. It certainly makes stocking selection easier (and the early morning rush to get ready, a little less stressful).

Stoxbox was invented by Danielle Ashcroft and won a Melbourne Design Award in 2012.

It seems I must REALLY like this particular stocking because I just found 3 pairs of them in my drawers (oops!).

They fit neatly into the drawer for clear visibility.

Stoxbox retail for $14.95 each or 3 for $39 and are available from David Jones.

Visit www.stoxbox.com.au for further info.

Oh My Lord (of the Fries)

December 30 2012 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

I recently had the pleasure of attending a tasting event at one of my favourite food joints, Lord of the Fries and it was, oh so yummy!

Of course there were fries aplenty and all the fabulous sauces to go with them. My fav is definitely the Parisian but I’ve now got a soft spot for the Belgian, Vietnamese and Thai.

I would never have imagined that I’d be falling in love with a Canadian (please don’t tell my husband) but LOTF Canadian fries are amazing. Who would of thought (other than the Canadians) that fries, smothered with grated cheese and gravy could taste so AMAZING!

This would be the perfect late night snack, perhaps on the way home from a club – if only I still went out at night 😉

Something I had been dying to try was the Chilli Poppers – breaded hot chillies stuffed with cheese. Mmmmmmm, I definitely got a kick out of those.

I took a (non-vegetarian) girlfriend along with me and she thought the Spicy Burger was one of the BEST BURGERS she’d ever tasted. I can see why it’s one of their most popular items.

One of the highlights of my night was meeting Mark and Sam, the brothers (and Lords) who created LOTF.  These boys certainly know their stuff.

We finished our evening with the chocolate mousse and then rolled back to the car.

Lord of the Fries have 7 locations around Melbourne so make sure you visit one soon. You can check out their menu and find out more about them at www.lordofthefries.com.au.

You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy LOTF, you just need to enjoy yummy food!

pack’d Kid’s Luggage

December 16 2012 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

I was recently sent a pack’d kid’s wheelie suitcase to review and I’m, oops, I mean my daughter is loving it.

Designed by two talented local mums, Rachelle and Kathy, these cases are sure to be a hit with all little jetsetters and travellers (and their parents).

The first thing I noticed when I received the case, was how light it was. At only 2.5kg, it’s light enough for the kids to wheel or carry around, which means one less thing for mummy to do (woohoo!).

The cases comes in four funky patterns including the funky “Dot to Dotty” (our favourite), ultra hip “Humbug” stripe, the oh so cool “Superstar” and for kids who are always on the go “Dashing Hound”.

I love the dots so much that I’m wishing I kept it for myself. Hopefully my daughter will share.

Another thing I love about this case, is the shape (42cm x 40cm x 22cm). It almost square and quite wide, so perfect for transporting some bigger toys or books.

We packed the case for a sleepover at grandmas and my daughter said “it’s kinda light mummy, did you remember to put my toys in there”?

We’ve managed to put a pair of sandals, a pair of slippers, a nightie, underwear, singlet, kaftan, pants, dress, toiletries, leap pad and unicorn toy. There was at least enough room for another change of clothes and a book or two. The internal strap helps make sure that everything is in place on arrival.

It’s perfect for an overnight stay or weekend getaway and would definitely hold enough toys and activities for even the longest flight.

The hard shell ensures that even their electronic toys will arrive in one piece and a simple wipe with a damp cloth or nappy wipe will keep the case clean.

pack’d cases arrive safely zipped into their own coordinating storage bag to keep it clean between travels.

The cases retail for $159 and are available from www.packd.com.au.

Bon voyage

Sammy Sea Patrol

November 4 2012 By melbournemamma 23 Comments

Whilst on holidays recently at the Gold Coast, my two little ones were fascinated with the surf lifesavers everytime we went to the beach. My 4yr old daughter had lots of questions, “who are those people?”, “what do they do?”, “why are THEY allowed to drive on beach?”, “why are the flags red & yellow, this is Australia, they should be green & yellow?” (she is very patriotic :)).

Imagine their delight when I was given the opportunity to review the new “Sammy Sea Patrol” toy.

The new toy from WOW, Sammy Sea Patrol is a lifesavers jeep, that comes with all the kit required to help in any emergencies including two figures dressed as Australian lifesavers (aptly named Cody & Summer), a rotating watch tower and a life ring that is attached to a retractable pull cord, so that children can re-enact a rescue mission. This toy is suitable for children as young as 18 months and comes with a 10-year warranty from WOW Toys.

This toy is ideal for role play and teaching children about the importance of water safety.

My two quickly began acting out a scenario where one of them was a naughty shark named “Bruce” (they love Finding Nemo), while the other was the lifesaver that had to save a swimmer in the water.

They’ve since gone on to rescue each other from a naughty whale (they also love Pinocchio) and a crazy octopus called “purpley” (no idea where he comes from….).

They are both having so much fun with the toy and can’t wait to get back to the beach to see the lifesavers again.

Hubby and I have also sat down with them to join in on the fun and we’ve been discussing the importance of being safe, both at the beach and in a swimming pool.

For more information on water safety, please visit Life Saving Victoria. If you’re interested in learning more, you should also check out Life Saving Victoria’s Meet a Lifeguard program, you can also download some great colouring in sheets for the kids.

If you would like to purchase this toy for your little ones, it is available now from www.kidstuff.com.au.

To help spread the water safety message, I have one Sammy Sea Patrol toy for someone to win.
