2022 Reading Challenge

January 2 2022 By melbournemamma 12 Comments

Attention book lovers! I’ve set myself a reading challenge for 2022 and I’d love for you to join me.

I’ve only included 12 books in the challenge because I know what it’s like to be a busy mum. However, I’ll also include an additional six books for those of you who will have no problem smashing through 12 books in one year.

Spending another year in and out of lockdown meant I had a bit more time to read in 2021 and I managed to read 28 books. You can see which ones were my favourites here. You can see how I went in my 2021 reading challenge here.

I’m going to try and read 28 books again this year. I’ve just started a new migraine treatmetn too, so hoepfully I’ll have less migraines and it will be easier for me to read more.

I can’t wait to get started on this challenge and hopefully find some new favourites that I just can’t put down.

Must read books for 2022 Reading Challenge

  • A book with 22 letters in the title
  • A book with an animal on the cover
  • A bestseller from the 1990s
  • A book with a pretty cover
  • A book with “good” or “bad” in the title
  • A book recommended by someone on Instagram or Facebook
  • A book written by a local author
  • A book with a colour in the name
  • A book with gold lettering
  • A book with more than 600 pages
  • A book that has been translated from another language
  • A book being made in to a movie this year

Extra books to read

  • A historical fiction book
  • A book published in 2022
  • A guilty pleasure book
  • A book that will improve your life
  • One of my favourite reads from 2021
  • A different book by an author that you read in 2021

Let me know if you’re joining the reading challenge in the comments below (put your book titles in the comment section NOT the URL field) and feel free to come back and list the books you read throughout the year and let me know if you enjoyed them or not.

Keep an eye out for the books I’m reading and make sure you tag your own books on social media using #mmreadingchallenge2022

I hope you enjoy my 2022 Reading Challenge.

10 Best Books I Read in 2021

December 17 2021 By melbournemamma 2 Comments

I’ve read some really amazing books recently, so when I sat down to choose the 10 best books I read in 2021, I knew it was going to be hard for me to choose only 10.

And there wasn’t even a stand-out favourite as I read several books this year that will now count as my all-time best books.

I try to read of variety of books in my 2021 Reading Challenge and I’ve found some amazing authors that I’ve never read before too.

In no particular order, here are the 10 best books I read in 2021.

Betty – Tiffany McDaniel

I already called this my favourite book of the year way back in February!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Even though this book tore my heart to pieces, I could not put it down (is that weird 🤷🏻‍♀️) and I actually had no words when I finished it #notlikeme⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Based on the life of the author’s mother, Betty is a page-turning Appalachian coming-of-age story filled with resilience, tragedy, discrimination and loss….. but also a father’s unwavering love for his children, especially his “little Indian” Betty.⁣⁣

A Man Called Ove – Fredrik Backman

I’m so glad that I finally got around to reading this book – it had been on my #tbrpile for awhile – and I can see why so many people rave about it.

This wonderful and heartwarming tale of unlikely friendships, kindness, love and loss will be one that I remember for years to come.⁣
⁣
I laughed. I cried. And I laughed some more.⁣

The Heart’s Invisible Furies – John Boyne

If you haven’t already read this book – add it to the top of your reading pile right NOW!!!

I laughed, I cried, I got angry and I got swept away in the brilliantly written story.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart – Holly Ringland

This was the first book I read this year by first-time Aussie author Holly Ringland and I absolutely loved it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The farm that I was staying at, at the time, was the perfect location to immerse myself in this captivating story of love, loss and redemption.⁣⁣

A Little Life – Hanya Yanagihara

I read this book back in February and it still haunts me. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s definitely not a book for the faint-hearted and I found I could only read about 100 pages at a time (it’s 700+ pages) before I’d need a break.⁣
⁣⁣
I wasn’t sure if I was even going to make it to the end but I quickly became invested in the characters and was glad that I did because even though this is an incredibly sad and heartbreaking story, it’s also a story of extraordinary friendships and love.⁣⁣

Us Against You – Fredrik Backman

I always worry that when I read the second book in a series that I’m not going to enjoy it as much as the first but boy was I wrong with this one. ⁣
⁣
This book is bloody fabulous and I actually think I loved it more than I loved “Beartown” (which was fantastic!).⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This beautifully written story has it all; strength, love, family, grief, loyalty, courage and loss. ⁣

The Light Between Oceans – M.L. Stedman

I’ve read quite a bit of Australian based fiction this year and this would have to be one of my favourites.⁣
⁣
It’s a heartbreaking tale of what happens when good people make bad choices. And makes you wonder what you would do in the same situation.⁣

The Good Sister – Sally Hepworth

This is the first book I’ve read by local Melbourne mamma Sally Hepworth and it was brilliant. ⁣
⁣
It has the perfect mix of love, laughter, sibling rivalry and suspense, and was just what I needed after starting the year with some pretty intense books. ⁣

I cannot wait to read more of Sally’s books.

Anxious People – Fredrik Backman

I cannot get enough of Fredrik Backman’s books! Anxious People is the fourth book I’ve read of his and I’ve loved them all.⁣
⁣
This is a story about many things – a bank robbery, a rabbit costume, a bridge, pizza and idiots – mostly it’s a story about idiots.

When She Was Good – Michael Robotham

What was the last book that you just couldn’t put down?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The first night I started this book, I didn’t put it down until 2.18am and then I couldn’t put it down again until I finished it the next night 1:47am. ⁣⁣ It was so fast paced and suspenseful.
⁣⁣⁣
This is the second book in this series, so make sure you read “Good Girl Bad Girl” first (it’s awesome as well).

⁣⁣What books have you loved this year? Have you read any of my favourites?

Keep track of other books I love in my Goodreads.

10 Books I Want To Read in 2021

February 18 2021 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

10 books I want to read in 2021 blog

The pile of books on my bedside table never seems to get any smaller and my kids have told me that I’m not allowed to buy or borrow any more books until I read them, so I going to list a few of them here, so that I’m accountable for at least reading some of them this year.

I cannot wait to read these books in 2021 and I’m hoping some of these books will count towards my 2021 Reading Challenge.

PS. It’s not too late to join the challenge, so check it out.

Betty

Betty by Tiffany McDaniel book cover

A girl comes of age against the knife.’ So begins the story of Betty Carpenter.

Born in a bathtub in 1954 to a Cherokee father and white mother, Betty is the sixth of eight siblings. The world they inhabit is one of poverty and violence – both from outside the family and also, devastatingly, from within. When her family’s darkest secrets are brought to light, Betty has no choice but to reckon with the brutal history hiding in the hills, as well as the heart-wrenching cruelties and incredible characters she encounters in her rural town of Breathed, Ohio.

Despite the hardship she faces, Betty is resilient. Her curiosity about the natural world, her fierce love for her sisters and her father’s brilliant stories are kindling for the fire of her own imagination, and in the face of all she bears witness to, Betty discovers an escape: she begins to write.

A heartbreaking yet magical story, Betty is a punch-in-the-gut of a novel – full of the crushing cruelty of human nature and the redemptive power of words.

A Little Life

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara book cover

A Little Life is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance.

When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they’re broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity.

Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome – but that will define his life forever.

A Man Called Ove

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman book cover

At first sight, Ove is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots – neighbours who can’t reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the vicious coup d’etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents’ Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets.

But isn’t it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?

In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible…

Verity

Verity by Colleen Hoover book cover

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin. When Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, asks Lowen to complete the remaining books in a contract his permanently injured wife is unable to fulfill, Lowen has no choice but to accept.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home with the intention of only staying one or two nights-long enough to sort through Verity’s chaotic home office to collect all the notes and outlines she’ll need to start writing the first novel. But the more time Lowen spends with Jeremy Crawford, the less of a hurry she is in to leave.

While there, Lowen uncovers a hidden manuscript. An autobiography containing chilling admissions Verity planned to take to her grave, including the truth behind the events that turned their lives upside down. A truth that, if revealed to Jeremy, would further devastate the already grieving father. Lowen decides to keep the manuscript a secret, allowing Jeremy to continue to believe Verity is merely an innocent, unfortunate victim of circumstance. But as Lowen’s feelings for the devoted father and husband deepen, she wonders if keeping Jeremy in the dark is in her own best interest. After all, if Jeremy were to read his wife’s autobiography, the disturbing truth would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Greenlights

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey book cover

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.

Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”

So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.

Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.

It’s a love letter. To life.

It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.

A Gentleman In Moscow by Amor Towles book cover

Honeybee

Honeybee by Craig Silvery book cover

‘Find out who you are, and live that life.’

Late in the night, fourteen-year-old Sam Watson steps onto a quiet overpass, climbs over the rail and looks down at the road far below.

At the other end of the same bridge, an old man, Vic, smokes his last cigarette.

The two see each other across the void. A fateful connection is made, and an unlikely friendship blooms. Slowly, we learn what led Sam and Vic to the bridge that night. Bonded by their suffering, each privately commits to the impossible task of saving the other.

Honeybee is a heartbreaking, life-affirming novel that throws us headlong into a world of petty thefts, extortion plots, botched bank robberies, daring dog rescues and one spectacular drag show.

At the heart of Honeybee is Sam: a solitary, resilient young person battling to navigate the world as their true self; ensnared by loyalty to a troubled mother, scarred by the volatility of a domineering stepfather, and confounded by the kindness of new alliances.

Honeybee is a tender, profoundly moving novel, brimming with vivid characters and luminous words. It’s about two lives forever changed by a chance encounter — one offering hope, the other redemption. It’s about when to persevere, and when to be merciful, as Sam learns when to let go, and when to hold on.

Untamed

Untamed by Glennon Doyle book cover

There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent–even from ourselves.

For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her own discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There She Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high. But she soon realized they had come to her from within. This was her own voice–the one she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions, cultural conditioning, and institutional allegiances. This was the voice of the girl she had been before the world told her who to be. Glennon decided to quit abandoning herself and to instead abandon the world’s expectations of her. She quit being good so she could be free. She quit pleasing and started living.

Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is the story of navigating divorce, forming a new blended family, and discovering that the brokenness or wholeness of a family depends not on its structure but on each member’s ability to bring her full self to the table. And it is the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honor our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts so that we become women who can finally look at ourselves and say: There She Is.

2021 Reading Challenge

January 2 2021 By melbournemamma 12 Comments

Attention book lovers! I’ve set myself a reading challenge for 2021 and I’d love for you to join me.

I know what it’s like to be a busy mum (ie not have much time for reading), so I’ll only include 12 books in the challenge. However, I’ll also include an additional six books for those of you who will have no problem smashing through 12 books in one year.

As a chronic migraine sufferer, I don’t read as many books as I’d like too but thanks to an almost six-month lockdown here in Melbourne (#bloodycovid), I actually managed to read 30 books in 2020.

I’m not sure how this year will pan out, but I’m aiming to read 25 books this year.

You can see how I went in my 2020 reading challenge here.

10 Great Books for Tweens

June 21 2020 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

19 great books for tweens

If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know that my daughter LOVES to read.

She showed a love of reading from a very young age and now that she is 12, she’s churning through books faster than I am.

As she’s gotten older, I’ve found it increasingly harder to find great books for tweens that are age appropriate. There seems to be a fine line between being suitable for 10-12 year olds and then suitable for teens (15+).

Influenza A 🤒 I do NOT recommend it! 0/5 ⭐ Influenza A 🤒

I do NOT recommend it! 0/5 ⭐

So, I've been in bed since last Sunday and finally got confirmation from the Dr that I have the flu 😫

What a 🤬 nightmare of a week it has been.

My son and I both woke up feeling like 💩 on Mother’s Day and it was all downhill from there.

Thankfully, he only had a sore throat and a cough (negative for COVID) and was well enough to return to school on Thursday.

I, on the other hand, have been barely able to get out of bed all week and have a continuous cough, chills, sore chest, shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, aches and pains - even my eyeballs hurt 👀🤷🏻‍♀️

I have not been this sick for a very long time.

Still not sure how I've avoided getting COVID for two years but as soon as the flu is about - WHAM!!! I've got it 💥

Considering that I still wear a mask at the shops and hadn’t really gone out much in the week prior, I assume my son picked it up at school 🦠

As soon as I'm well enough l’ll be getting my flu 💉

Anyone else feel like this is going to be a looooooong Winter? 😷🤧😬

What a fabulous tale! This one had me hooked fro What a fabulous tale!

This one had me hooked from the start and I didn’t want Mercy and Wasabi’s adventure to end.

I “may” have also wanted to rush out and buy a van and a puppy, and head off on a road trip across Australia 🚐🐶🗺

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Meet Mercy Blain, whose house has just burnt down. Unfortunately for Mercy, this goes beyond the disaster it would be for most people: she hasn't been outside that house for two years now.

Flung out into the world she's been studiously ignoring, Mercy goes to the only place she can. Her not-quite-ex-husband Eugene's house. But it turns out she can't stay there, either.

And so begins Mercy's unwilling journey. After the chance purchase of a cult classic campervan (read tiny, old and smelly), with the company of her sausage dog, Wasabi, and a mysterious box of cremated remains, Mercy heads north from Adelaide to Darwin.

On the road, through badly timed breakdowns, gregarious troupes of grey nomads, and run-ins with a rogue adversary, Mercy's carefully constructed walls start crumbling. But what was Mercy hiding from in her house? And why is Eugene desperate to have her back in the city? They say you can't run forever...”
