Pretty Little Birthday Celebration

February 4 2015 By melbournemamma 2 Comments

We recently celebrated my daughter’s 7th birthday.

She wanted to do something “fun” and “creative” for her birthday, so we decided on a jewellery making party.

Originally I contemplated (for a nano second) running the party myself, but let’s face it – I have NO idea of what to do, so I decided it was best to look for someone who did. …

Funky Elephant – Craft Activities for Kids

August 6 2013 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

How excited were my kids when the postman delivered a box for them with their names on it!

They were even more excited when they opened the box and saw what was inside.

Funky Elephant Trunks are a box full of children’s activities tailor-made for 3 to 7 year olds.

Funky Elephant trunks are home-delivered and come personally addressed to your child.

Trunks are full of creative, fun and exciting activities and come with everything kids need to complete the projects, all they need is their imagination.

We received a sibling box, so there were enough supplies for both my kids.

The theme of our box was Wind, and our projects were making a wind car, a wind chime and a windmill.

The kid’s decided they wanted to make the wind car first and volunteered their daddy to help.

First a quick check to make sure we have all the materials ready.

Time to decorate with stickers and drawings.

Next came the all important construction phase.

Miss 5 was able to follow her dad’s instructions and did nearly all of it by herself. Master 3 needed some help from daddy but was really pleased with himself when finished.

After some minor tweeking and a final check, they were ready for an engineering inspection by Miss 5.

Tick of approval from the engineer.

And it was time to race!

Our next project was to make a wind chime.

This was a very simple project that only required the kids to colour in the wooden heart pieces using the oil pastel crayons included in the trunk.

The kids were so engrossed in what they were doing that they didn’t even notice I was taking photos.

Master 3 was so happy that he could do this one all by himself.

They were both so proud of their final product. Both wind chimes are now hanging near our front door.

The last project in the trunk was make a windmill.

This project required the kids to colour in the cardboard piece that spins around. They both needed a little help from me at the end to assemble the windmill.

This was a great project for Master 3 because it didn’t matter how well he coloured in the cardboard, it still looked fabulous when folded in the windmill shape.

Both kids only wanted to colour one side of the cardboard, which is why these are white on the inside. They’ve told me the will finish colouring the other side soon.

Overall, they had a great time creating these items and they have asked several times when the next “Elephant box” is arriving.

Trunks are available on a 2 month, 6 month or 12 month subscription.  The trunk is addressed to your child so it makes it all the more fun and exciting!

Great gift for a child that already has everything and a perfect idea to share with relatives when they ask what to get the kids for Christmas!

Visit www.funkyelephant.com.au for more information or to order your trunks.

Make It Yourself: Hair Clip Holder

January 28 2013 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

Today I made a hair clip holder for my daughter (and her ever increasing collection of hair clips).

It was soooo easy that I’m kicking myself for not making one sooner.

I used materials I already had lying around the house but I’m sure you could pick up all the items for no more than $10 from your local craft/fabric store.

I had an old canvas print that used to hang in our house years ago (see, sometimes it pays to hold onto stuff/crap), so along with a fat quarter of fabric and some ribbon from my craft box, I had everything I needed.

I used a hot glue gun to secure the fabric and ribbon but you could also use a staple gun or even tacks.

First step was to iron the fabric, so it was crease free (I only ironed the centre section and left the edges that were being folded over).

Then I lay the fabric face down on the table and positioned the canvas (I used the polkadots as a guide to make sure the canvas was straight).

Then I began folding over and gluing each side of the fabric, making sure that I pulled it tight each time. I didn’t worry about how neat it looked at the back because I’m going to cover the back with a large piece of cardboard, just to finish it off.

The I spaced out the ribbons and secured them with thumb tacks at each side, to hold them in place while I glued them at the back.

Once the glue had dried, I removed the tacks and it was ready to decorate.

In total it took me no more than 20 minutes to make and that was with the assistance of a 5 yr old and a 2yr old (who now wants one for his room, even though he doesn’t have any clips 🙂 )

You should give it a go.

Influenza A 🤒 I do NOT recommend it! 0/5 ⭐ Influenza A 🤒

I do NOT recommend it! 0/5 ⭐

So, I've been in bed since last Sunday and finally got confirmation from the Dr that I have the flu 😫

What a 🤬 nightmare of a week it has been.

My son and I both woke up feeling like 💩 on Mother’s Day and it was all downhill from there.

Thankfully, he only had a sore throat and a cough (negative for COVID) and was well enough to return to school on Thursday.

I, on the other hand, have been barely able to get out of bed all week and have a continuous cough, chills, sore chest, shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, aches and pains - even my eyeballs hurt 👀🤷🏻‍♀️

I have not been this sick for a very long time.

Still not sure how I've avoided getting COVID for two years but as soon as the flu is about - WHAM!!! I've got it 💥

Considering that I still wear a mask at the shops and hadn’t really gone out much in the week prior, I assume my son picked it up at school 🦠

As soon as I'm well enough l’ll be getting my flu 💉

Anyone else feel like this is going to be a looooooong Winter? 😷🤧😬

Best Anzac Biscuits ever!!! 😍 ⁣ I've tried a Best Anzac Biscuits ever!!! 😍
⁣
I've tried a few different recipes over the years and this one is by far our favourite.⁣
⁣
It's a super easy recipe and my daughter has been making them by herself for a few years now 👧🏻⁣
⁣
Let me know what you think once you've made them.⁣
⁣
Anzac Biscuits⁣
⁣
1 C rolled oats⁣
1 C raw sugar⁣
¾ C dessicated coconut⁣
1 C plain flour, sifted⁣
125 g butter, melted⁣
2 tbs Golden Syrup⁣
½ tsp bicarb soda⁣
3 tbs boiling water⁣
⁣
Method⁣
⁣
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees, no fan. (If your oven is fan forced, drop it down to 160 degrees)⁣
⁣
Line a baking tray with baking paper.⁣
⁣
Place the oats, coconut, flour and sugar in a bowl, stir with a wooden spoon to combine. ⁣
⁣
Melt the butter and golden syrup in a saucepan over low heat. ⁣
⁣
In a separate bowl, combine the bicarb and boiling water, then add this to the butter/syrup mixture. It should foam up and increase in size. ⁣
⁣
Pour this into your dry mix and stir.⁣
⁣
Once combined, roll into golfball sized balls and place onto baking tray(s), spacing them about 6 cm apart.⁣
⁣
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. For an even bake, you can rotate the tray by 180 degrees halfway through baking.⁣
⁣
Cool on tray or transfer to wire racks. ⁣

What a fabulous tale! This one had me hooked fro What a fabulous tale!

This one had me hooked from the start and I didn’t want Mercy and Wasabi’s adventure to end.

I “may” have also wanted to rush out and buy a van and a puppy, and head off on a road trip across Australia 🚐🐶🗺

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Meet Mercy Blain, whose house has just burnt down. Unfortunately for Mercy, this goes beyond the disaster it would be for most people: she hasn't been outside that house for two years now.

Flung out into the world she's been studiously ignoring, Mercy goes to the only place she can. Her not-quite-ex-husband Eugene's house. But it turns out she can't stay there, either.

And so begins Mercy's unwilling journey. After the chance purchase of a cult classic campervan (read tiny, old and smelly), with the company of her sausage dog, Wasabi, and a mysterious box of cremated remains, Mercy heads north from Adelaide to Darwin.

On the road, through badly timed breakdowns, gregarious troupes of grey nomads, and run-ins with a rogue adversary, Mercy's carefully constructed walls start crumbling. But what was Mercy hiding from in her house? And why is Eugene desperate to have her back in the city? They say you can't run forever...”
