Butterflies and Birthdays

October 28 2012 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

Last weekend we celebrated my daughter’s 5th birthday. I still can’t believe that my baby girl has turned 5 and will be heading off to school next year. Sometimes I wish I could just stop time and enjoy these early years just a little longer.

Last year my daughter chose a Rainbow theme, so I was curious to see what she wanted this year. I figure that since she’s old enough to say what she wants (which she does often), I wanted to get her involved with choosing a theme and helping get everything ready.

This year she chose a butterfly party.

Last year I heard about a company that brings live butterflies for birthday parties and thought that would be perfect. When I spoke to Marie-Claire at Butterfly Adventures, I knew that my daughter was going to love it.

I wanted to make some decorations for the table, so I purchased some gorgeous milk glass plates from Petite Portions and borrowed some glasses domes from my lovely friend Daisy at Leo & Bella. I then grabbed some twigs from the local park and cut out some butterfly clipart that I printed from the internet and made two of these table decorations.

I also wanted something to hang above the table and had seen some butterfly lanterns on Pinterest that I knew would be perfect. I bought some white paper lanterns from the local $2 shop and attached some more butterflies that I had printed.

I saw some amazing edible butterfly decorations on Etsy awhile ago and knew they would also be perfect (and an easy way) to decorate the cake. I made a two tiered buttercake with vanilla buttercream icing and decorated it with the butterflies. My daughter gasped when she saw the cake for the first time, so I know that she loved it.

I finished off the table with fruit cups, butterfly fairy bread, cupcakes, coconut ice, marshmallows, musk sticks and pink milk in glass bottles with gorgeous paper straws.

The butterflies were amazing and all of the children enjoyed learning about butterflies, colouring butterfly pictures and going in the tent to feed them (who would have guessed that they love to drink gatorade).

My daughter said it “was the best birthday ever Mummy” and I think I have to agree with her 🙂

Migraines and Botox – My life as a pin cushion

September 13 2012 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

I thought it was time for another migraine update as lots of people have been asking how I’ve been doing.

One of the reasons I haven’t done an update for awhile is because it seem like whenever I’m doing well and I talk or write about it, I end up jinxing myself and I get a migraine. No kidding, it really happens.

I was just telling someone earlier this week how I’d gone for almost 12 days without one and was feeling really good and then later that day I went down in a heap and had a shocking migraine for the next three days.

Other times I don’t feel like writing or talking about it because I’m going through a rough patch and I’m too frustrated or upset to talk about it.

Anyway, for those of you who are new to my blog, I have been having Botox injected in my head for the past year, to try and control my migraines, which I suffer from between 3-5 days per week.

The migraines are a result of what happened to me on this day.

Every 12 weeks I visit my neurologist and he injects Botox (approx 40 times) in to my head, neck and shoulders. It hurts like hell and the feeling of tightness in my head for three months is very uncomfortable but at this stage it’s the only way I can manage (ie survive) day-to-day life.

The Botox has definitely made an improvement to the frequency and severity of my migraines but unfortunately not as much as I would have liked. It has helped a little bit with the pain in my shoulder too.

I’ve gone from having 3-5 days of migraines a week to only 1 or 2 days and I’ve even gone up to 12 days without one.

I now know that this is probably as good as it’s going to get, so I just have to make the most of it. Yes, I have days were it just gets too much and I’m angry and frustrated but I just have to remind myself that it could have been a LOT worse.

The past 10 years of my life has been dominated by these migraines and unfortunately it looks like they’re here to stay!

You can read more about my treatments here and here.

My haul from the Melbourne Mamma’s Market!

September 2 2012 By melbournemamma 5 Comments

Last Sunday, I certainly shopped up a storm at Melbourne Mamma’s Market.

The new venue at Willliamstown Town Hall was fantastic and with 37 local stores selling brand new designer label gear at 50-80% off RRP, I knew I was going to pickup some fabulous bargains.

Here are all the goodies I bought for my daughter. The RRP for all of this was $850.65. I paid $275!!!!

My haul included 6 long sleeve tops, 2 tees, 1 bikini, 1 swimsuit, 3 leggings, 1 pjs, 1 nightie, 1 short, 1 poncho, 1 zip hoodie, 2 dresses & 2 butterfly mirrors

My biggest bargains were a Purebaby dress reduced from $59.95 to $10 and a Lil Ludy bikini and one piece for only $5 each!

Here are all the goodies I bought for my son. The RRP for all of this was $363.50. I paid $160!

My biggest bargains were Esp Jeans reduced from $69.95 to $30 and long sleeve Oishi-m tees reduced from $39.95 to $15!

This haul includes 3 shorts, 1 jeans, 2 tees, 2 long sleeve top, 1 track pants, 2 storage baskets and a wall sign.

Now I just need to figure out how I’m going to fit all this gear in their wardrobes.

Anyone else grab some fabulous bargains on the day?
