Qubies Review

July 8 2012 By melbournemamma 2 Comments

Recently I attended the Baby & Kids National Buyers Show and I saw lots of fabulous products for little ones.

One particular product that grabbed my attention was Qubies.

When my little ones were starting solids, I was pureeing all kinds of foods in large quantities to store in the freezer and I was forever replacing the cubes I used, as the the lids seemed to snap off easily or the cubes would crack while I was trying to remove the frozen food from them.

When I heard about Qubies, I jumped at the chance to test them.

For this review I froze pureed pumpkin and lemon juice (my husband’s family are Italian, so we have an endless supply of lemons, which seem to go to waste quicker than I can say “pass me a gin & tonic 🙂 ).

The first thing I realised was how simple it was to fill the tray and the max fill line makes it easy to pour in the exact amount. It was so much easier than trying to spoon fill multiple little containers, get their lids on and then fit them in a tray.

The qubies lid fits easily on to the tray and provides a tight seal with no spills (I put the tray on its side and upside down when I filled it with lemon juice and there were no leakages).

The compact size means that it takes up minimal space in the freezer and the flat design makes them easily stackable if you have mulitple qubies in the freezer at once.

Previous containers I have used for freezing food have required me to either partially defrost the food to get it out of the container or use more forceful means (ie bash it on the bench) to get the food out of the container.  Not the Qubies – all I needed to do was give the container a slight twist, peel back the silicone lid and and I had eight 30ml portions ready to pop into a bag and put back in the freezer.

The tray and lid were super easy to clean (I asked my husband after he washed them 🙂 ) and you can pop them in the dishwasher too.

If you’re looking for something to make preparing nutrious home cooked meals easier for you, then I definitely recommend you try the Qubies.

They would also make a great gift for any new parents.

Qubies are available in pink, blue & green and you can purchase them at www.qubies.com or from selected retailers around Australia (RRP $19.95). They are BPA, Phthalate & PVC free.

Made by Us Twilight Market

June 25 2012 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

The Royal Children’s Hospital Auxiliaries Design & Craft Market

I’m looking forward to popping down to Malvern Town Hall on Saturday for the “Made by Us Twilight Market“. Shopping AND supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital at the same time – it doesn’t get any better than that.

The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation and Auxiliaries present the Made by Us Twilight Market, a one-off free event showcasing a curated selection of goods handcrafted by the Auxiliaries, local designers and craftspeople on Saturday, 30 June 2012 at the Malvern Town Hall, High St, Malvern (12 – 6pm).

All proceeds from the market will go to The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH).

More than just a market, the Made by Us Twilight Market is an awareness and fundraising event, and an opportunity to celebrate the Auxiliaries 90th Anniversary in the suburb where they were founded in 1922.

Since then, the Auxiliaries have raised over $38 million for the RCH through community volunteering. The Made By Us Market is a stellar example of both their fundraising and creative work.

RCH Foundation’s Executive Director Sue Hunt says “For 90 years, the Auxiliaries have fundraised for the hospital.  Their creative entrepreneurship and dedication never ceases to amaze and impress. The RCH Auxiliary network are active all year round, but it’s not often that they come together under one roof.  This is a rare chance to both celebrate their wonderful work, and raise much-needed funds for the hospital.

“We’re also hoping to inspire a new generation of Melbourne’s arts, craft and culture enthusiasts to get involved with community fundraising.  It’s a rewarding pastime, delightful community and of course, a great cause.”

The Made By Us Markets’ 50+ stalls –will feature high-quality homewares and soft furnishings, ceramics, paper goods, bath products, plants, jewellery, bags, knits, clothing for all ages, toys, baked goods, jams and preserves. Expecting a diverse crowd of Melburnians with their hearts (and wallets!) open to supporting the hospital, the stalls’ offerings are tailored so there is something for everyone, young and old.

At no cost to enter, market-goers will enjoy a festival style atmosphere, and a line-up of acoustic live music from young local musicians.

Not to forget warming the bellies, the winter-themed café will be serving delicious treats, soups, hot chocolate, coffee, spiced nuts and more.

An event not to be missed, join The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation and Auxiliaries for a day of shopping, music, great food – all for a great cause.

As the Auxiliaries mission says: ‘We are one team, working towards one goal – making sick kids better’. With the help of the public, the Made by Us Twilight Market will bring the Auxiliaries’ closer to their goal.

Visit to www.madebyusmarket.com.au for more info.

I hope to see you there.

Birthdays, Botox and Broken Bones

June 18 2012 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

Today is my birthday. Yay!

Normally I would celebrate with family and friends, and perhaps go out to lunch or dinner and indulge in my favourite pastime, shopping.

Unfortunately nothing fun for me today because I have another appointment with my neurologist to get more Botox injections to help treat my migraines.

Today was the only day he could fit me in (how ironic) and it’s important that I have treatment every 12 weeks because last time we left it for nearly 15 weeks and I had a major flareup towards the end which kept me bedridden for days.

Botox is not something I would normally consider having on my birthday (perhaps if I was turning 40 LOL), but at the moment my priority is getting my migraines under control, so I will do without the celebrations for now.

My migraines are the result of what happened to me on this day and I have been struggling with them for the past 10 years.

I have been having Botox injected in to my head, neck and shoulders for the past nine months and although it has not gotten rid of them completely, it has enabled me to function better, as both a mum and a human being.

I’m kind of resigned to the fact that I will continue to have migraines, perhaps for the rest of my life, but hey, it could have been a lot worse.

This won’t be the first time I have required medical attention on my birthday – at my 10th birthday party, I somehow managed to break my wrist while playing a game where you have to sit on the floor when the music stops. It was my party and I did cry because I wanted to.

Anyone else ever had a birthday they’d rather forget?

THE BEST CHIPS EVER!

June 17 2012 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

Hallelujah!  I’ve done it. I have found THE BEST CHIPS EVER!

Right here in Melbourne at my favourite new place to dine Lord of the Fries.

If you’re like me (Hello, my name is Tracey & I am a chipaholic) and you love hot chips, do yourself a favour and get down to Lord of the Fries NOW!!!!

Their chips are made right here in Melbourne from Aussie grown potatoes and come with a delicious array of homemade sauces. My favs are the Parisian (Aioli Garlic Mayo) and (Thai) Golden Satay Sauce. I’m planning on making my way through the list of 12 sauces (purely for research purposes, I swear).

Not only do LOTF make the best chips EVER but they also serve the tastiest vegetarian burgers in town. Yes, that’s right, I said vegetarian burgers. Their whole menu is vegetarian and they also cater for vegan, gluten free, halal and kosher.

For this vegetarian mamma, it’s like a dream come true. My issue now is deciding what to have with my fries;  a burger, a hot dog, onion rings, nuggets, potato cakes or chilli poppers.

My carnivorous husband is dying for me to take him to LOTF. So if you’re one of those (meat eaters) too, don’t think that you are not going to enjoy this place. The food is fabulous and your body (& taste buds) will thank you.

I went to the store in Brunswick St, Fitzroy but you can also find them at Chadstone, Chapel St, Elizabeth St, Flinders St & Melbourne Central.

Is it dinner time yet?

Just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConag Just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy and… Wow!!!
What. A. Ride. 📚

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. And the twists? I did not see them coming.

Charlotte McConaghy proves once again why Australian authors are absolutely unmatched when it comes to vivid storytelling and emotional punch 🇦🇺📚

It’s beautifully written, deeply moving, and completely unputdownable.
Highly, highly recommend!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Have you read it yet? Let’s chat 👇

“Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers. But with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants, packing up the seeds before they are transported to safer ground.

Despite the wild beauty of life here, isolation has taken its toll on the Salts. Raff, 18 and suffering his first heartbreak, can only find relief at his punching bag; Fen, 17, has started spending her nights on the beach among the seals; 9-year-old Orly, obsessed with botany, fears the loss of his beloved natural world; and Dominic can’t stop turning back towards the past, and the loss that drove the family to Shearwater in the first place.

Then, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman washes up on shore. As the Salts nurse the woman, Rowan, back to life, their suspicion gives way to affection, and they finally begin to feel like a family again. Rowan, long accustomed to protecting her heart, begins to fall for the Salts, too. But Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers the sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realises Dominic is keeping his own dark secrets.”
