A Delicious Afternoon at The Windsor

July 12 2013 By melbournemamma 102 Comments

I was lucky enough to be invited to Afternoon Tea at The Windsor recently, and I was thrilled that I could spend the afternoon there with my mum.

I remember as a little girl, my Grandmother telling me stories of when she was younger and she and some girlfriends would get dressed up and catch the train in to the city to enjoy afternoon tea at a magnificent hotel. I always thought it sounded so glamorous and hoped that when I grew up I would do something similar.

It wasn’t until mum and I sat down and started talking about her that afternoon, that my mum told me that the Hotel Windsor was THE same place that my grandma loved coming too, more than 60 years ago.

Located at 111 Spring St, Melbourne (opposite Parliament House), The Hotel Windsor has been serving Afternoon Tea every day since 1883.

It’s not hard to see why their Afternoon Tea is iconic in Melbourne.

In addition to ribbon sandwiches and the hotel’s famous scones served with double cream and Windsor jams, we also enjoyed a yummy selection of pastries that included the classic Lemon Meringue Pie (one of my all time favs), Chocolate Éclair, Mille Feuille, Bakewell Tart, and the famous Sacher Torte.

We were also treated to a glass of sparkling wine on arrival.

With 15 exclusive teas to choose from, I settled on the The Hotel Windsor Afternoon Blend and cherished being able to drink my (three cups of) tea while still hot (a luxury not often afforded to mums).

An indulgent dessert buffet is featured on weekends for those of you with a really sweet tooth.

The Windsor offers two afternoon tea sittings seven days a week, at 12 noon and 2.30pm. The cost for weekday afternoon tea is $59 and $79 for weekends. Bookings are essential for weekends. Visit www.thehotelwindsor.com.au for further info.

The Windsor is celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2013. Built in 1883, the 180-room hotel pre-dates the Savoy in London, which was built in 1889, the Waldorf Astoria in New York which dates back to 1893, and the Ritz Paris which opened in 1898.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, The Hotel Windsor and Melbourne Mamma are giving one lucky reader the opportunity to WIN Afternoon Tea for Two at The Hotel Windsor.

My Afternoon at Uni Hill Factory Outlet

July 9 2013 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

I recently headed down to Uni Hill Factory Outlet for an afternoon a kid-free shopping (woohoo!).

I don’t often get the chance to hit the shops without at least one child in tow, so as I drove to the outlet, I knew I needed to make the most of the couple of hours I had.

First stop was a visit to Simone Perele, who coincidentally were having a VIP Shopping Day, which meant 30% off their already low prices. Very quickly I was heading out the store with a matching bra and brief set for only $58 (RRR $129.90).

My daughter started school this year and is really getting into reading, so when I saw that All Books 4 Less were selling ALL their books for only $5, I popped in and grabbed a couple of books for her.

Shoes were not on my agenda for the day (for once) but when I spied the 50% off everything sign at Milu, I knew that it would be criminal/immoral (?) for me to bypass. 10 minutes later I was the happy owner of a gorgeous pair of ($35) ballet flats. When my husband asks, I will tell him they are for work 😉

Next stop was Russell Athletic with the intention of buying something for hubby. Somehow I managed to grab myself a hoodie instead but that’s OK because now I can give him back all the ones I’ve borrowed of his. It was a win win for everyone – I think.

I then dashed to Maddness Hair Design for my appointment for a blow wave. VERY rarely do I go to the hairdressers just for a blow wave but I was going out that night to celebrate my birthday, so a special ‘do’ was in order. Rebecca did a fabulous job of curling my hair and gave me some handy tips for making my hair look just as fabulous when I headed out a couple of hours later.

I’m not sure what I love most about visiting the hairdresser – the end result or the simple pleasure of drinking a hot cup of tea and reading some trashy mags without interruption.

I was so in love with my new hair that I contemplated sleeping upright in a chair that night, just to make the most of it (don’t pretend you’ve never thought about doing that LOL).

I’ve got a bit of a scarf fetish at the moment, so when I saw some scarfs in Unik for only $10, I grabbed two because I couldn’t decide which one I liked best.

I was pretty impressed with my bargains for the day and am looking forward to going back to Uni Hill Factory Outlet again very soon.

When I got home I flashed the Simone Perele bag in hubby’s direction and mumbled something about books for our daughter as I quickly smuggled the rest of my bags inside 🙂

B-DAY Today!

July 4 2013 By melbournemamma 3 Comments

Today was B-DAY!

No, not my birthday (that was two weeks ago). It was time for another dose of Botox to treat my migraines.

For the past 21 months, I have been having Botox injected in to my head, neck and shoulder to help control my migraines. Every 12 weeks, I visit my Neurologist and he stabs me approximately 40 times with a syringe full of Botox.

The migraines are the result of an accident I had 11 years ago.

Although the treatment isn’t working as well as I hoped it would, I have gone from having migraines 3-5 days every week (yes, every single week, since 2002) to only 1 or 2 a week. This may not sound that good to you but believe me,  it’s much better than before.

It’s hard being mum to two small children and always being sick. My daughter used to ask what was wrong with me when I didn’t have a migraine (which broke my heart).

Sometimes I feel like my kids miss out on doing things because of my condition, and it makes me feel guilty. They are such great kids and they always TRY to be on their very best behaviour when they know mummy is sick.

I am eternally thankful for the support of my husband, family and friends, who are there for me when I’m struggling.

You can read more about my treatments here.

WIN Yummy Treats from Carman’s Kitchen

June 22 2013 By melbournemamma 50 Comments

Thanks to the fabulous folks at Carman’s Kitchen, I’ve got 8 delicious packs of goodies to giveaway.

Carman’s Kitchen is the brainchild of local Melbourne mum, Carolyn Creswell. Carolyn started the business 20 years ago, as an 18 year old with big dreams. She has since gone on to expand the company in to the international marketplace, meet Prince Charles and share a muesli bar (that she found in the bottom of her handbag) with him (true story). In her sparetime 😉 she is mum to four young children.

Carman’s Kitchen believe food ingredients should come from the kitchen, not the chemist.  They believe in being proud of their ingredients with no need to hide them in fine print.  They believe nuts and seeds are good for our well-being.  They believe that once you’ve tried Carman’s, you will love it!

The kids and I recently tried some Carman’s Kitchen products after receiving some samples at a blogger’s brunch and we loved them. Their muesli if now my daughter’s favourite choice for breakfast and both the kids love their range of Yummo’s bars and biscuits, a couple of which may have “accidentally” found their way in to my lunch box for work.

Now you have the chance to win a pack containing:

  • Popcorn Bars – Honey x 2
  • Popcorn Bites – Raspberry, Apple & Choc x 2
  • Popcorn Bites – Strawberry, Apple & Yoghurt x 2
  • Star Bakes – Apple & Choc Chip x 2
  • Yummo’s cap, Carman’s notepad, Carman’s keychain

I went into this book knowing very little about th I went into this book knowing very little about the Vietnam War, and it was a real eye-opener.

Kristin Hannah has an incredible gift for bringing history to life, and The Women is no exception. This emotional and powerful story follows the experiences of women who served during the war - stories that are often overlooked - and it left a lasting impact on me. I love historical fiction, and Kristin is truly a master storyteller.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Women can be heroes, too’. When twenty-year-old nursing student, Frances “Frankie” McGrath, hears these unexpected words, it is a revelation. Raised on California’s idyllic Coronado Island and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing, being a good girl. But in 1965 the world is changing, and she suddenly imagines a different path for her life. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she impulsively joins the Army Nurses Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the young men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war, as well as the unexpected trauma of coming home to a changed America. Frankie will also discover the true value of female friendship and the heartbreak that love can cause.”

Have you read this or any of Kristin’s other books?
