Happy Birthday Little Man

February 27 2012 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

Two years ago, I was at home preparing (mentally) for arrival of my second child. Due to injuries sustained in a car accident, I was booked in to have a c-section on Monday, 1 March 2010.

I had planned to spend the weekend with my 2 year old daughter, doing lots of fun things together and explaining to her that mummy was going to the hospital on Monday and that when she came in to visit me later that day, the baby would be here.

It seems the baby had other ideas!

I struggled a lot during this pregnancy and by six months was suffering an extreme amount of pain in my pelvis and back. My belly had gotten so big, that I was often asked if I was having twins.

On the Friday night before I was due to have the baby, my back and pelvis were giving me lots of grief. The constant, unrelenting pain, kept me up & pacing the house all night. By the time my husband woke in the morning, I was ready to scream (in fact I think I did).

Against my wishes, he called my Dr & asked if there was anything I could do about it. The Dr recommended I come in to the hospital for checkup. I didn’t want to go but called my mum to come & look after our daughter while we went in. As we were leaving, my husband grabbed my bag, just in case they decided to keep me in till Monday (LOL).

When we arrived at the hospital, I changed into a gown and as I hobbled/waddled out of the bathroom, my Dr arrived, he took one look at me & announced “let’s get that baby out now”.

What the?

I looked at my husband and he was as shocked as I was. All of a sudden there were people everywhere, and I was on a geurney being wheeled to the theatre. I told my husband he better go back to the car & grab my bag (we didn’t think I was going to need it) and call mum to tell her we weren’t coming home.

It was about this time I started to panic. It wasn’t that I was scared about what was to come, it was just that I wasn’t prepared for it to happen right then & there. All of a sudden, I feel dizzy & hot & my heart was racing. By the time they began, I was beginning to calm, so much in fact that I almost fell asleep (probably due to the fact that I hadn’t slept for more than 36 hours). Everyone thought it was funny that I was nodding off while being cut open.

Within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital, my new baby was out and ready to meet the world.

The Dr then told me that I had actually been in labour and he could see my contractions when he opened me up (which explained the horrendous pain, I was in the night before). It’s funny how it had never even crossed my mind that I was in labour.

Thankfully, they got my little boy out when they did because he had somehow managed to tie a knot in his umbilical cord which could have been very dangerous if gone undetected.

I was still in a daze when they handed him to me for the first time but as soon as I saw him my heart melted and I thought he was the most gorgeous boy in the whole wide world.

Happy New Year!

January 17 2012 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

I know I’m a bit late but I have been so busy organising things for the next Melbourne Mamma’s Market, that I have only just realised that we’re already more than half way through January!

I’m thrilled to tell you that the next sale will be on Sunday, 18 March 2012 at the Ukrainian Hall in Essendon.

So far the response from retailers has been fantastic & I can’t wait to let you know who will be there on the day & what brands they will be bringing.

There also a women’s sale coming in April – which means lots of fabulous designer labels bargains for us too.

I hope you have all had wonderful start to the year & I look forward to sharing with you, some exciting developments at Melbourne Mamma in 2012.

Until next time

What A Year!

December 31 2011 By melbournemamma Leave a Comment

What a year 2011 has been for me.

At the start of the year I was preparing myself to return to work after a year at home on maternity leave. Even though I love being at home with my kids, I’m also (kind of) a workaholic and enjoy my work as a Technical Writer, so was looking forward to having 2 days back in the office.

Two hours in to my first morning back at work I was informed that I was no longer needed and being made redundant. WHAT THE? I was in shock and couldn’t believe they had waited till I came back in to the office to tell me.

I’d only been made redundant one other time in my life and that was when Ansett closed down and everyone in the company lost their jobs. This time I felt like a failure – why didn’t they want or need me anymore. I wondered if going on maternity leave had jeopardised my position in the company.

I lay in bed that night & began to think about my future…….it was then that a plan began to formulate in my mind 🙂

While on maternity leave and at home with 2 small children, I began to find it more & more difficult to get to the shops and especially get to all the sales. I had been thinking how much easier it would be if all the sales were together in one place, so mums like me could shop without all the drama!

I decided that night that I was going to organise a sale – a fantastic sale that would bring melbourne’s favourite stores together in one place and offer local mums tonnes of gorgeous gear at fabulous prices. And that’s were it all began.

I’m proud of myself for achieving so much during the part 9 months (including not being made redundant – it’s long story) and can’t wait to see what lies in store for Melbourne Mamma in 2012. I’ve met so many amazing mums (who run their own businesses) this year and I look forward to working with them and meeting many more in the new year.

My dad always said that if anyone could turn their love of shopping into a business it would be me and I imagine him looking down on me and shaking his head with a chuckle, because I’ve actually done it.

Look out 2012 – here I come!

The Worst Day Ever!

December 16 2011 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

Eight years ago today, I held my dad’s hand and said goodbye, as he took his last breath – it was the worst day of my life.

I’m still confused at how quickly my world turned upside down, as the cancer that we hoped my dad would beat, took his life. During the days leading up to this, we were optimistic that he would recover and come home.

I was up in Canberra visiting my family and my (now) husband had come up for the weekend to race in a triathlon. The plan was for the both of us to return to Melbourne after the race and then go back to Canberra the following weekend for Christmas. On the morning we were due to leave, I decided to stay and Anthony went home alone. I’m glad I made that decision, as it would have been worse if I hadn’t been there.

Later that morning, I answered the telephone at my parents house, to be told that my dad was being transferred from the hospital to palliative care. They said there was nothing more they could do and that they were now just going to make him comfortable. WTF! We were shocked, as we had no idea that he was that bad.

We went to the hospice and I spent the day with my dad, putting on a brave face and pretending that everything was going to be ok. When we went home later that night, I couldn’t wait for morning, so we could go back to visit. I wasn’t sure how long we had left.

Just before midnight I answered another telephone call, this time it was the one we had been dreading – dad had taken a turn for the worse and we needed to come in straight away. I thought I was going to faint. I got my mum and my brother out of bed and we raced to the hospital.

I felt a piece of my heart broke when I walked into the room and saw him there. It was like some kind of really bad dream and I just wanted to wake up.

We sat with him for a while and prayed for a miracle – unfortunately one didn’t arrive and as we slipped out of his room to grab a cuppa sometime in the early hours of the morning, a nurse came to tell us “this is it – if you want to say goodbye, you need to do it now”.

Oh My God! the whole room started spinning, I wasn’t ready for this, I didn’t want to say goodbye.

I took my mum’s hand and led her back to his room. We all said our goodbyes and as I sat down next to my dad, I kissed his cheek, told him I loved him & then watched him take one last breath. That was it – he was gone and it was the worst feeling ever.

Somehow I managed to drive us all home and crawled into bed with my mum just before the sun came up. Neither of us slept, in fact I don’t think we slept for days.

The rest of the day was a blur of phone calls and visitors. It was difficult having to call family members and friends and let them know what had happened. I managed to make it through most of the calls without losing it and tried to remain strong for my mum. It broke my heart to see her so sad.

The trip back to Melbourne was a long one. We decided to bring my dad “home” and bury him in his favourite place in the world “Melbourne”. The funeral was held a couple of days before his birthday and Christmas.

What once was such a joyful and festive time of year for my family is now tinged with sadness. It’s been made alot brighter since having my kids but I wish they had got to meet their grandfather and had the chance to know what an amazing man he was.

I miss you dad & I’ll love you forever x
