2026 Reading Challenge

January 3 2026 By melbournemamma 1 Comment

Hey there, book lovers!

This year, I’m keeping things simple with a 2026 reading challenge focused on 12 books – one per month – plus six optional extra reads for those who want to read more.

I only managed to read 22 books in 2025 – a combination of a hectic work schedule and a few months where migraines made it hard to focus. But despite the slower year, I’m feeling excited and motivated for 2026, and I can’t wait to dive into new stories and discover some truly unputdownable reads.

Must-read books for Melbourne Mamma’s 2026 Reading Challenge

  • A book with 26 letters in the title
  • A book featuring sisters
  • A book starting with the letter B
  • A bestseller from 2006
  • A book by an Australian author
  • A book with a blue cover
  • A book with a murder
  • A book borrowed from friends or family
  • A book with ‘Night’ in the title
  • A book about friendship
  • A book with a car, plane or train on the cover
  • A book you meant to read in 2025

Extra books to read

  • A 2026 new release
  • One of the books I read in 2025
  • A historical fiction book
  • A book that you have a screenshot of in your phone
  • A book with a sport in it
  • A book with less than 200 pages

I’d love for you to join me! Let’s swap recommendations, cheer each other on, and celebrate every great book we finish. Are you in? Drop a comment below with your book titles and feel free to come back throughout the year to add more books and share whether you loved them or not.

Keep an eye on the books I’m reading, and don’t forget to tag your own reads on social media using #mmreadingchallenge2026. Let’s make 2026 a year full of amazing reading adventures!

Mad Mabel is officially my favourite Sally Hepwort Mad Mabel is officially my favourite Sally Hepworth book yet. It had everything - heart, humour, chaos, and characters that jumped off the page. I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed some more.

If you love character-driven stories with humour, heart, and a touch of beautiful madness, this one’s a must-read.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“There are two kinds of people no one ever expects to be murderers: little girls and old ladies. Meet Mad Mabel.

Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick is eighty-one years old. She’s lived on her idyllic street, Kenny Lane, for sixty years—longer than anyone else. Aside from being a curmudgeon who minds everyone else’s business, few would suspect that Elsie has a past that she has worked exceedingly hard at concealing. Because when it comes to murder, no one ever suspects little girls or old ladies. And Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick, once a little girl and now an old lady, has a strange history of people in her life coming to a foul end.”

Tell me… have you read any of these books?

Crispy tofu bánh mì + a raspberry cordial = the small joys getting me through recovery.

Not fancy. Just comforting. And honestly, exactly what I needed 🥖❤️

Just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConag Just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy and… Wow!!!
What. A. Ride. 📚

From the very first chapter, I was hooked. And the twists? I did not see them coming.

Charlotte McConaghy proves once again why Australian authors are absolutely unmatched when it comes to vivid storytelling and emotional punch 🇦🇺📚

It’s beautifully written, deeply moving, and completely unputdownable.
Highly, highly recommend!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

“Dominic Salt and his three children are caretakers of Shearwater, a tiny island not far from Antarctica. Home to the world’s largest seed bank, Shearwater was once full of researchers. But with sea levels rising, the Salts are now its final inhabitants, packing up the seeds before they are transported to safer ground.

Despite the wild beauty of life here, isolation has taken its toll on the Salts. Raff, 18 and suffering his first heartbreak, can only find relief at his punching bag; Fen, 17, has started spending her nights on the beach among the seals; 9-year-old Orly, obsessed with botany, fears the loss of his beloved natural world; and Dominic can’t stop turning back towards the past, and the loss that drove the family to Shearwater in the first place.

Then, during the worst storm the island has ever seen, a woman washes up on shore. As the Salts nurse the woman, Rowan, back to life, their suspicion gives way to affection, and they finally begin to feel like a family again. Rowan, long accustomed to protecting her heart, begins to fall for the Salts, too. But Rowan isn’t telling the whole truth about why she set out for Shearwater. And when she discovers the sabotaged radios and a freshly dug grave, she realises Dominic is keeping his own dark secrets.”
